DENVER – March 11, 2022 - “Team InnOvention,” a business school student team from the University of Colorado – Denver Business School was named the grand prize winner of the 2022 Media+Tech Innovation Challenge. The 16th annual signature event for the Media+Tech Collective, an industry association dedicated to bringing together members from throughout the businesses of video entertainment and technology, was held earlier today at Comedy Works South in Greenwood Village, Colo.
Finalists were comprised of business school student teams selected from earlier campus case study competitions at the University of Denver’s Daniels College of Business and the University of Colorado – Denver Business School. All three finalists in 2022 were from the University of Colorado – Denver Business School.
The students on “Team InnOvention” take home the grand prize of $3,000 - and $4,500 in total - for winning the case study competition. The 2022 Media+Tech Innovation Challenge was sponsored by the StreamTV Show, scheduled for June 6-8, 2022 in Denver.
The three final teams competed by presenting ideas on how best for DIRECTV to survive digital disruption given changes in consumer behavior, competitor flux, revenue models, and technology and navigate the digital revolution with a financially viable business strategy.
MTC Innovation Challenge judges for the competition were Andy Karofsky, Co-Founder and COO, Frndly TV, Jay Kreiling, VP, Video Content at Charter Communications and Steve Smith, EVP, Affiliate Sales and Marketing, Outdoor Sportsman Group.
“The Media+Tech Collective’s annual Innovation Challenge competition continues to grow in its 16th year with a terrific case study that brought great passion and ideas from the business school student participants. said Justin Weatherwax, President of the Media+Tech Collective. “Cord-cutting and cord-shaving has been a dominant overhang on the business for legacy pay TV providers, and industry leader DIRECTV was a perfect case study subject for students to examine the challenges and opportunities ahead. Congratulation to the winning team and all of the talented students who participated.”
In addition to the grand prize total of $4,500 ($1,500 to each of the final teams), each member of the winning team will have a preferred opportunity for a local paid industry internship. Previous hiring companies included Comcast, Sand Cherry Associates, Spectrum (Charter Communications) and Starz. Since its inception, many Media+Tech Innovation Challenge participants have secured permanent jobs at Denver-area companies following successful internships.
Started in 2007, the MTC Innovation Challenge event gives business students real-life, pay TV business case studies for intensive research and analysis. The MTC Innovation Challenge leverages the great talent from the existing education base in the Greater Denver/Front Range with the wide collection of pay TV operators, programmers, consultants and vendors in the region, and is now bolstered by the MTC’s expansion welcoming all companies in the media and technology businesses at-large including video, broadband, telephony, commercial services, and more.
